Tonys 2013: ‘Kinky Boots’ wins best musical
“Kinky Boots, the Musical,” which featured a Cyndi Lauper score and book by Harvey Fierstein, was named best musical at the 67th Tony Awards, presented Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall.
Based on the little-seen 2005 British comedy of the same name, “Kinky Boots” highlights an unlikely partnership between a shoe-factory owner and a drag queen, who together craft 6-inch stilettos for men.
The show opened April 4 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre with Jerry Mitchell at the helm.
Fierstein previously won a Tony for the book of “La Cage aux Folles” and has two acting Tonys, for “Torch Song Triology” and “Hairspray.”
