Metropolitan Museum of Art to name costume institute for Anna Wintour
Her name is at the top of the masthead of Vogue magazine. This spring, it will also grace the newly renovated costume institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The Met announced Tuesday that it is naming the building housing its costume institute after Anna Wintour, the editor in chief of Vogue. The Anna Wintour Costume Center is scheduled to reopen to the public May 8 after extensive renovations.
Museum officials said the curatorial department will continue to be known as the Costume Institute.
Wintour has served as a trustee of the Met since 1999 and has helped the museum raise approximately $125 million for the costume institute. She has chaired or co-chaired numerous benefits for the museum since 1995.

The British-born Wintour has been the editor in chief of the U.S. edition of Vogue since 1988. A fixture at fashion shows and society events, she is widely regarded as one of the most powerful people in the fashion industry.
The Met said that funding for the renovation includes a gift of $10 million from Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch, as well as $1 million commitments from Janet and Howard Kagan and the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation. (Newhouse runs Conde Nast, which owns Vogue and other prominent publications.)
Tisch’s donation will be honored with a new, 4,200-square-foot Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Gallery at the renovated building.
