“Matilda the Musical,” the hit family-friendly show based on the Roald Dahl book, will launch a national tour at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles in 2015, organizers announced Thursday. The musical, which won multiple Tony Awards, is currently running on Broadway and on London’s West End.

“Matilda” will run at the Ahmanson from May to July 2015, organizers said without announcing exact dates. The Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, first produced the musical before it moved in 2011 to the West End, where it won seven Olivier Awards, the London equivalent of the Tonys.

On Broadway, “Matilda” continues to run at the Shubert Theatre, where it opened in April. The Broadway cast includes rotating young actresses in the title role of a headstrong girl who defies her elders. The production, directed by Matthew Warchus, lost the Tony for best musical to “Kinky Boots.”

But the show did win Tony Awards in four other categories as well as a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theater for each of the four girls who shared the title role.

The “Matilda” national tour is being produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Dodgers -- the New York theatrical producing team that includes Des McAnuff.

The musical was adapted from the Dahl book by Dennis Kelly and features songs by Tim Minchin.

Center Theatre Group said it would announce its full 2014-15 season for the Ahmanson at a later date.
