Disney’s ‘Aladdin’ to appear on Broadway next year
A certain luminescent Genie will take the Broadway stage this spring – along with Princess Jasmine, Prince Ali and Jafar -- in a new, musical adaptation of Disney’s 1992 animated film, “Aladdin.”
“Aladdin” will join other Disney animated films -- “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King,” “Tarzan” and “The Litte Mermaid,” among them -- adapted for the musical stage with varying degrees of success. “The Lion King” won six Tony awards including best musical and is still running. “Beauty and the Beast” ran on Broadway from 1994 until 2007. “Tarzan” and “Mermaid” had much shorter runs.
The production of “Aladdin” features music by Tony-winner Alan Menken, and lyrics by Tim Rice and the late Howard Ashman, with direction and choreography by Tony-winner (for “Book of Mormon”) Casey Nicholaw. Chad Beguelin wrote the book for the show.

The creative team for “Aladdin” also includes scene design by Bob Crowley, costume design by Gregg Barnes, and “illusion design” by Jim Steinmeyer.
The 1992 film “Aladdin,” a musical comedy, was directed by John Musker and Ron Clements. It starred Scott Weinger, Robin Williams and Linda Larkin as the voices of Aladdin, the Genie and the Princess, respectively.
Performances will begin at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Feb. 26. Opening night is planned for March 20. Casting has not yet been announced.
