Danh Vo wins 2012 Hugo Boss Prize from Guggenheim Foundation

Artist Danh Vo has been named the winner of the 2012 Hugo Boss Prize, which is administered by the Guggenheim Foundation. Vo, who was born in Vietnam in 1975 and grew up in Denmark, will have a solo exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York next year.

The annual prize, which was founded in 1996, comes with a monetary award of $100,000. Hugo Boss is the sponsor of the prize. The award recognizes contemporary artists of all media and ages. Past winners include Hans-Peter Feldmann, Emily Jacir, Tacita Dean and Matthew Barney.

This year’s finalists were Trisha Donnelly, Rashid Johnson, Qiu Zhijie, Monika Sosnowska and Tris Vonna-Michell.

Vo has shown his work at museums and galleries around the world, including at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He lives and works in Berlin. In 2006, he had a residency at the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles.

This year’s prize was selected by a jury chaired by Nancy Spector, deputy director and chief curator of the Guggenheim Foundation, and consisting of Magali Arriola, Suzanne Cotter, Kate Fowle, Nat Trotman and Theodora Vischer.

In a statement, the jury said that Vo’s “assured and subtle work expresses a number of urgent concerns related to cultural identity, politics, and history, evoking these themes through shifting, poetic forms that traverse time and geography.”
