Escaped inmate, facing attempted murder charge, is found in L.A.
A 29-year-old man who escaped a San Bernardino County jail during an outdoor recreation period was found Monday by Los Angeles police.
Deshaun M. Stamps of Riverside was taken into custody by the Los Angeles Police Department. Deputies had discovered he was missing from West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga about 12:19 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.
Stamps has been in custody since Jan. 30, 2023. He was charged with attempted murder, removing a police officer’s firearm with special circumstances, obstructing or resisting an officer, vandalism and other charges, according to court records.
Doubts around Stamps’ mental health were raised in court in February 2023. He was referred for mental health diversion that August, according to court records.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has not released further details about where Stamps was, how he got to L.A., or how he escaped from the West Valley Detention Center, one of the largest jails in California.
