Woman shot by police after stabbing her son in South L.A., both hospitalized, LAPD says
Police shot a woman Friday night after she stabbed her 10-year-old son in South Los Angeles, according to authorities. Both the woman and child were hospitalized, police said.
Officers were called at 6:52 p.m. to the 200 block of West 52nd Street for a report of a violent woman with mental illness, said Officer Tony Im, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.
The 30-year-old woman threatened to harm her son and barricaded herself and the child inside a home, police said.
An LAPD mental evaluation unit was unable to persuade the woman to surrender, police said in a statement.
Officers observing through a window shot the woman after seeing her stabbing her son, police said.
The child suffered multiple stab wounds and was taken to a hospital, where he was stable, police said.
The woman was also taken to a hospital and was stable, police said. A knife was recovered from the scene, they said.
A law enforcement source described the incident as a child custody dispute.
