Mandatory evacuation orders issued for rapidly growing brush fire in Castaic area
Officials have issued mandatory evacuations for a rapidly growing brush fire in the Castaic area.
About 2 p.m. Wednesday, the L.A. County Fire Department posted on Twitter that officials were responding to a one-acre fire in the 29000 block of the Old Road, north of the North County Correctional Facility. By 7:50 p.m., the North fire had grown to 650 acres with 0% containment.
The Santa Clarita sheriff’s station has issued mandatory evacuations for residents north and west of West Hills Drive, north of Iron Village Drive, north and west of Tesoro del Valle Drive, and north of Copper Hill Drive. Residents on Rye Canyon Loop are under voluntary evacuations.
The station said that residents ordered to evacuate should contact the Red Cross for help finding lodging by emailing [email protected].
The Castaic Animal Care Center at 31044 Charlie Canyon Road is open to evacuated animals.
Bernard Peters, a spokesperson for the department, said that the fire was moving east toward the hills behind northern Santa Clarita.
The city of Santa Clarita has asked that people avoid the area to make way for emergency crews. It said that West Hills Drive is closed from Copper Hill Drive to Iron Village Drive.
According to the National Weather Service, L.A. and Ventura counties will see warm and dry conditions through Saturday with an increased potential for brush fires.
