Ft. Hood shooting: Watch how the news spread on Twitter
As news broke on Wednesday about a shooter at Ft. Hood who killed three and wounded 16 before killing himself, chatter about the event developed on Twitter. A map Twitter provided to the "Today" show shows where and how much people were talking about the incident.
The map displays the volume of geo-tagged tweets that were published over a five-hour span, starting at about an hour before the shooting and going until 8 p.m. CDT. The tweets included the terms "Fort Hood" and "#FortHood," according to "Today." In the last day, there have been nearly 300,000 tweets using those terms, data from Topsy show.
Within an hour of the shooting, which took place at about 4 p.m. CDT, the volume of tweets dramatically increases in Texas, where Ft. Hood is located, and the heavy concentration stays there until 8 p.m. But people all over the world were tweeting about the incident, including people in Europe, Australia, Africa, South America and Asia.
