Live unboxing: The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch [Video chat]
Samsung’s latest gadget isn’t a smartphone. It’s a smartwatch.
This month, the South Korean giant released its Galaxy Gear gadget in the United States. The device goes for $299.99 and pairs up with the new Galaxy Note 3 smartphone.
Samsung’s smartwatch features a touchscreen display that can be used to show users new messages, display incoming calls and run apps. The wristwatch can also be used to make voice calls as well as take photos and video with a camera located in the band.

Samsung has had a rough start with the Galaxy Gear, with initial reviews saying the device has potential but advising most consumers to hold off for the next generation of the smartwatch.
But the company is bristling at the reviews. It launched a massive marketing campaign to promote the device, running 10 full-page ads in each of the Friday editions of the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today. It also released ads by the 72andSunny agency that compare the Galaxy Gear to popular telephone watches from old TV shows.
