Google fans have long called for devices running unaltered versions of its Android operating system, and Google delivered just that this summer.

The HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S 4, the two top Android smartphones, went on sale recently on Google Play. The Google Play editions of the phones run versions of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean that haven’t been altered by HTC or Samsung. Smartphone makers typically customize the operating system for their devices with additional features and different designs.

We’ll be unboxing the two smartphones this afternoon at 1 p.m. PDT.

The Google Play editions of the HTC One and GS4 are available on Google’s online store. The phones are available with no contract for $599 and $649, respectively. The two devices are compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile networks.

Previously, the pure version of Android has typically been reserved for Google’s own brand of Nexus smartphones and tablets.

Some users have complained about altered software, saying it bloats the devices with features that they don’t like and don’t need.
