Apple will roll out a new and improved version of the Maps navigation app in the next major update for its iPhone and iPad software, a report Tuesday said.

The Cupertino tech company is working on major under-the-hood changes for Apple Maps that should improve the apps accuracy, according to 9to5Mac, which cites unnamed sources. Apple is also working on implementing public transportation data -- perhaps the most important feature still absent -- into its navigation app.

Apple plans to announce and release the improved version of Maps alongside the release of iOS 8, the next version of the iPhone and iPad operating system. Typically, Apple announces the next version of iOS at its developer conference, held each summer.

To provide information for public transportation directions, Apple will use data it has gained through recent acquisition and its various partnerships, 9to5Mac said.

According to the report, Apple is also working on a new way to add indoor mapping views. To do this, the company is working on an augmented reality feature that would use the iPhone’s compass hardware. This feature would allow users to easily find nearby points of interest.
