Apple to Philippe Starck: What secret project?

This morning, we told you famed French designer Philippe Starck claimed he had been working with Apple on a “revolutionary” project that would debut later this year.

Not so fast, Apple says.

The Cupertino, Calif., tech giant told All Things D this afternoon that it was not working on a new product with Starck, despite his telling French newspaper Le Figaro that he had teamed up with the company to design a product to be released in eight months. He declined to give more details, citing Apple’s “cult of secrecy.”

Starck’s interview led to frenzied speculation about what the secret project could be -- Apple’s much-rumored iTV? A new iPhone?

All Things D mused that Starck may have actually been referring to a yacht he was helping former Apple CEO Steve Jobs build:

“Prior to his death, Apple CEO Steve Jobs was working with Starck on a yacht,” the tech blog said. “And this is very likely the ‘fairly, if not very, revolutionary’ project he was talking about. To be built by luxury superyacht builder Feadship, the yacht is believed to have a very minimalist and sleek design with a main feature being 40-foot-long glass walls. And Starck has been involved in its design.”

Starck has designed mass-produced consumer goods such as toothbrushes, furniture and houses. He created a line of products for Target and also has worked as an interior designer on projects including Hollywood restaurant Katsuya.
