Apple, Shazam reportedly working on song discovery for upcoming iOS

Apple and Shazam are reportedly working together to create a music discovery feature that will be integrated into the next version of the tech giant’s iPhone and iPad software.

The feature would make it possible for Apple’s mobile device costumers to instantly identify a song and its artist by simply asking the Siri voice assistant “What song is playing,” according to Bloomberg.

Users can already do this by downloading the Shazam mobile app, but including the technology by default onto Apple’s iOS software would make identifying songs more seamless.

The feature is expected to be added onto iOS 8, which is expected to be revealed this June at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

The partnership could bolster Apple’s music sales, which have begun to dwindle due to the rise of music streaming services like Spotify and Pandora. Shazam, meanwhile, stands to benefit by having its technology exposed to more users.

Shazam declined to comment on the report and Apple could not be reached.
