Moby sees quick interest in refreshed Los Feliz home
Electronic-music pioneer Moby is gearing up for a release in historic Los Feliz.
An English traditional home that was renovated by the DJ and musician is pending sale but still accepting backup offers, according to the Multiple Listing Service. The asking price is $4.495 million.
Set on a corner lot, the walled and hedged 1926 house incorporates a fresh aesthetic while retaining such original details as groin vault ceilings and detailed fireplace surrounds.
Tall windows and crisp white wainscoting are among features in the dining room, which holds one of three fireplaces. The living space, at 4,644 square feet, includes an updated kitchen, a grand living room and a family room with walls of built-ins. There are two master suites for a total of five bedrooms and seven bathrooms.
On the lower level, a secret entrance connects an office and guest suite to a bathroom and steam room.
A flagstone-surrounded swimming pool and spa, sitting areas and mature trees make up the grounds.
Moby, whose legal name is Richard Melville Hall, rose to fame in the 1990s for his electronic dance music, including the 1999 electronica album “Play.” More recently, the 52-year-old released the album “More Fast Songs About the Apocalypse” last year. He has another album, “Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt,” due out this month.
Three years ago, he ventured into restaurant ownership, opening the vegan bistro Little Pine in Silver Lake.
Moby bought the property two years ago for $3.4 million. He previously owned the storied Wolf’s Lair compound in Hollywood Hills and owns other property in Los Feliz.
Patrick Martin and Gwen Banta of Sotheby’s International Realty hold the listing.
Freshened Colcord enters new phase
Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Beck and wife Marissa Ribisi have sold their Gerard Colcord-designed home in Brentwood for $3.44 million.
Set on a tree-filled acre in Mandeville Canyon, the 1964 Brittany Tudor has been refreshed and updated inside and out. Features include exposed brickwork, half-timbering and thick hand-hewn beams that top the main living areas. Large picture windows bring leafy views into the living room, which has a brick fireplace.
Upstairs, the home’s dormer windows create a space for a desk and reading area. Three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and an office also lie on the second floor. A guest/bonus room with open and beamed ceilings sits above the detached garage.
Patios, lawn, mature trees and hedges fill the grounds. Also incorporated in the redesigned landscaping is a private trail that runs up the back hillside.
Richard Stearns and Carrie Berkman Lewis of Pacific Union International were the listing agents. David Offer of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties represented the buyer.
Beck, 47, won an album of the year Grammy in 2014 for “Morning Phase.” His 13th studio album, “Colors,” is set for release this month. Ribisi, a 43-year-old actress, has film credits that include “Dazed and Confused” (1993) and “True Crime” (1999).
The couple bought the house two years ago from director-screenwriter James Mangold and producer Cathy Konrad for $3.15 million.
Outgrowing his hip ’hood
Australian singer-songwriter Cody Simpson is moving on from his West Hollywood town home of three years. He’s put the two-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom residence up for sale at $1.395 million.
The end unit, one of six in a gated complex, has been completely remodeled. It features 1,839 square feet of contemporary living space, high ceilings and distressed-wood floors. Two private balconies, a ground-floor patio and a rooftop deck extend the living area outdoors.
The updated kitchen and dining room area overlook the step-down living room, which has a fireplace and a wall of built-ins. There are walk-in closets in each bedroom plus an office/loft on the top floor.
An attached garage provides parking for two vehicles.
Suzette Abbott and Enzo Ricciardelli of Sotheby’s International Realty are the listing agents.
Since being discovered on YouTube in 2009, Simpson, 21, has released three studio albums, the most recent of which, “Free,” was produced by Cisco Adler. He started his own record label, Coast House, in 2015 and last year formed the band Cody Simpson and the Tide.
Outside of music, Simpson has competed on “Dancing With the Stars” and had a guest role on the show “Cougar Town.”
Mogul finds new slice of paradise
Byron Allen, the chairman and chief executive of the production company Entertainment Studios, has bought an oceanfront estate on the western shore of Maui for $22.8 million, property records show.
The three-quarter-acre Kihei property has 130 feet of beach frontage. Built in 2015, the estate centers on a 7,300-square-foot home with five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The doors, windows and trim are all mahogany, and the exterior is finished in coral stone.
The home features a double-island kitchen, a media room, an elevator and a 500-bottle wine cellar. There are three outdoor showers and an open-air spa. Expansive lanais add another 1,700 square feet of living space outdoors.
Also on the gated grounds are a swimming pool, caretaker’s quarters and a three-car garage.
The transaction is among the most expensive home sales historically on the island of Maui, according to sources with knowledge of the area.
Dennis Rush and Martha Rush of Elite Pacific Properties were the listing agents; David Richardson of Hawaii Life Real Estate represented the buyer. Ira Meltzer of One Million Dollar Plus in Rancho Mirage arranged financing.
Allen, 56, founded Entertainment Studios, which produces and distributes television shows, in 1993. He was the host and executive producer of the show “Comics Unleashed” and has film credits that include this year’s western “Hostiles.”
Since 2008, he has hosted the interview series “Entertainers With Byron Allen.”
Guiding light out of Studio City
Decorated television producer Jill Farren Phelps, whose work on the daytime soaps “General Hospital” and “The Young and the Restless” has won her scores of Emmys, has put her home on Mulholland Drive on the market for $2.5 million.
The ranch-style house, built in 1962 and full of colorful details, is secluded on more than half an acre above the Hollywood Hills and adjacent to protected land.
The 2,606-square-foot house features vibrant hues and wallpaper, crown molding and hardwood floors. A brick-surround fireplace anchors the living and dining rooms, which center on panoramic views through a row of French doors.
The brickwork continues in the family room, which has a wall filled with built-ins and doors opening to the patio. A skylight-topped breakfast nook sits off the updated kitchen. Four bedrooms and three bathrooms complete the floor plan.
Outside, a blue-tiled swimming pool and spa take in the city lights and mountains. Lush landscaping and lawn complete the grounds.
Emmanuel Xuereb and Salvator Xuereb of 360 Realty are the listing agents.
Farren Phelps, 67, got her start in television in 1974 as a production assistant on the show “Guiding Light” and won the first of 11 Daytime Emmys in the early ’80s as the music director for “General Hospital.” Her other credits include such soap operas as “Santa Barbara,” “Another World” and “One Life to Live.”
