Tennis legend Pete Sampras puts his Brentwood home in play for $8.9 million
Tennis legend Pete Sampras and his wife, actress-singer Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, have served up their home in Brentwood, listing the scenic estate for sale at $8.9 million.
The couple bought the gated home new in 2009 for $5.9 million and renovated and expanded the home, customizing the interiors and adding a resort-style swimming pool to the estate.
Set behind gates on a cul-de-sac, the contemporary-inspired traditional is surrounded by mature redwood trees. Lawns, running streams and gardens fill an acre of park-like grounds.
The 6,900-square-foot house has a library and theater room, plus a wine cellar. First- and second-floor master suites are each appointed with oversized closets and heated floors, for a total of six bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms.
An updated chef’s kitchen has a broad center island and a two-way fireplace shared with the formal dining room. Tall windows and clerestories take in the scenery.
French doors off the kitchen open to a flagstone patio with an outdoor kitchen. Built-in water features, up-lighting and an outdoor fireplace add to the comfortable ambiance.
Jordan Cohen of Re/Max Olson & Associates is the listing agent.
The 44-year-old Sampras won 14 Grand Slam men’s singles titles and held the No. 1 ranking for 286 weeks. Since he officially retired from the sport in 2003, he has beaten Roger Federer in an exhibition match, John McEnroe in the Outback Champions Series and Patrick Rafter in the Del Mar Development Champions Cup.
Wilson-Sampras, 42, has film credits that include “Billy Madison” (1995), “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (1997) and “The Wedding Planner” (2001).
She’s all about that space
Singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor has purchased a home in Toluca Lake for $4.9 million in a deal completed outside the Multiple Listing Service.
Originally singer Bing Crosby’s carriage house, the 1-acre estate was previously owned by actors Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green. The on-again, off-again couple sold the property in December for $2.6 million in another deal consummated off-market.
The single-story home was recently renovated by Todd DeMann and David Kramer of Paradigm Developers and evokes a modern farmhouse. A metal-clad roof and white-hued exterior lend a pastoral sheen to the residence, which is reached by a winding drive.
Inside, the open floor plan has been refreshed with lightly painted beams, wrought-iron chandeliers and wide-plank wood floors. Vibrant marble and a herringbone backsplash lend a contemporary look to the center-island kitchen.
There are four bedrooms and six bathrooms in more than 6,700 square feet of living space.
Century-old oaks and olive trees dot grounds that include a guesthouse and swimming pool and spa.
Craig Strong of John Aaroe Group and Kramer, also an agent with Hilton & Hyland, an affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate, assisted the seller in the deal. Wayne Saks of Rodeo Realty represented Trainor.
Trainor, 22, released the studio album “Title” in 2015 and “Thank You” this year. Among her hits are “All About That Bass,” “Lips Are Movin” and “Like I’m Gonna Lose You.”
She won a Grammy for best new artist this year.
Rocking out to a new price
Genre-bending musician Kid Rock has changed his tune in Malibu, relisting his Balinese-inspired compound for $10.995 million.
A price change isn’t the only thing that’s new. The 1.5-acre property, tucked within privacy hedges and gates on a cul-de-sac, and its 8,300-square-foot home have been freshened up this time around.
Updated interiors feature hand-carved doors and ornate woodwork, modern fixtures and skylights that give the home a light and airy vibe.
The five-bedroom, five-bathroom main house features a black and white mosaic foyer that opens to a formal living room and an adjacent dining room and open-plan kitchen. A two-sided fireplace divides the common areas; sets of French doors bring the lush grounds inside.
A family room, a gym, an office and a sauna are among the other rooms. The master suite is outfitted with two walk-in closets and a glass-enclosed shower.
A guesthouse overlooks a swimming pool and lounge area. An outdoor dining pavilion complete with a built-in barbecue, mounted flat-screen TV and fireplace sits off the main house.
There’s also a three-car garage.
Michael Cunningham of Pinnacle Estate Properties holds the listing.
Rock, 45, gained fame for his 1998 album “Devil Without a Cause.” The multiple-instrument musician, whose real name is Robert Ritchie, released the album “First Kiss” this year.
He bought the property in 2006 for $11.6 million, records show.
He’s found new place to kick it
Professional footballer and L.A. Galaxy captain Robbie Keane and his wife, former Miss Ireland Claudine Keane, have leased a home in Beverly Hills for $27,000 a month.
Sitting on more than half an acre in the Trousdale Estates area, the flat-roofed midcentury was formerly owned by late Emmy-winning lyricist and composer Ray Charles. Charles, who worked with Perry Como for three decades and was known as the “other Ray Charles,” died last year at age 96.
Following his death, the property came up for sale at $5.5 million and eventually sold for $7.02 million — $1.52 million over the asking price.
Recently rebuilt from the ground up, the single-story house has a contemporary vibe, with polished concrete floors, recessed lighting and floor-to-ceiling windows. Open-plan living areas have sliding glass doors that open to a swimming pool.
Views take in the surrounding canyons and downtown skyline.
Brent Watson of Compass was the listing agent.
Keane, 36, serves as team captain for the Galaxy and Ireland’s national team. The forward was the MLS most valuable player two seasons ago and has 79 goals in 117 games with the Galaxy since joining the team in 2011.
He is Ireland’s all-time top goal scorer.
Shooting for a sale in Encino
Local basketball star and NBA league executive Kiki VanDeWeghe and his wife, designer Peggy VanDeWeghe, have put their house in Encino on the market at $4.95 million.
The couple bought the property six years ago for $2.25 million and created a vibrant living space. Details include monochromatic notes, vibrant wall coverings and modern fixtures. A range of exotic and vintage pieces contributes to a classic yet eclectic ambiance.
Entered through a gated courtyard, the updated midcentury home has tempered-glass front doors that open to 5,773 square feet on a single story.
Inside, eye-catching details include a subdued dining room with vaulted ceilings and built-in wet bar/wine bar, and a living room with a 23-foot stone alcove. The stonework continues in the den, surrounding a wall fireplace with a vintage hood.
In the chef’s kitchen, white cabinetry and two black-hued and marble-topped islands pair to give the space a more traditional look.
The master suite, with a separate sitting room and a Moorish-inspired bath, is among the five bedrooms and five bathrooms.
Sliding glass doors open to grounds filled with various entertainment spaces, fruit trees, a Zen garden and a saltwater swimming pool. A lighted tennis court runs north to south to complete the setting.
VanDeWeghe, 57, is no stranger to Southern California, having attended UCLA and, before that, Palisades Charter High School in Pacific Palisades.
He made two all-star teams in 13 professional seasons and has had front-office roles with the Denver Nuggets and New Jersey Nets, now known as the Brooklyn Nets. He was promoted to executive vice president of basketball operations for the NBA last year.
