San Diego County sees first home sale over $20 million in more than a decade
A Del Mar estate built for activist investor David Batchelder has sold for $21.5 million, making it the most paid for a home in San Diego County in more than a decade.
Set on a bluff overlooking the ocean, the Mediterranean-style estate originally came to market last year at $29 million and more recently was listed for $24.5 million, records show. The sale is San Diego County’s first residential transaction of $20 million or more since 2007, according to real estate agents with knowledge of the area.
The buyers are John Hood, chief executive of San Diego-based Impact Biomedicines, and his wife, Sally, according to records obtained from the San Diego County Recorder. Impact Biomedicines, which focuses on treatments for patients with related cancers classified as myeloproliferative neoplasms, was acquired by Celgene Corp. earlier this year in a deal worth as much as $7 billion.
Completed last year, the six-bedroom, 7.5-bathroom home sits on slightly more than an acre with a detached guesthouse, multiple terraces and a 60-foot saltwater swimming pool and spa.
Indoor amenities include an elevator, an executive office and a screening room with a 108-inch screen. Radiant heating warms the floors in the kitchen and dining room as well as the outdoor patio. There are unobstructed ocean views from the spa and master suite, which has a walk-in closet with a separate washer/dryer and drying racks.
Last year, there were six sales of $10 million or more in San Diego County, with a high of $12 million, property records show. During the calendar years of 2015 and 2016, there were five sales of $15 million or more, including an oceanfront home in Del Mar that sold for $18 million.
Eric Iantorno and Lindsay Dunlap of Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty were the listing agents. Kyle Stanley of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage represented the buyers.
