Baseball great Rickey Henderson asks $2.4 million for Arizona home

Baseball fans, take note: Legendary Major League Baseball outfielder Rickey Henderson has listed his Arizona home, which was previously owned by Ryne Sandberg, for sale at $2.4 million.

The Tuscan-style home, built in 1991, backs up against South Mountain on nearly two acres in Ahwatukee neighborhood of Phoenix. Through a large porte-cochere, the home opens in grand fashion to a two-story foyer with a sweeping staircase leading to a second-floor balcony.

Clad in detailed columns and marble flooring, the 7,859 square feet of living space includes a game room, a workout room, a steam room, five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The master suite features a private balcony and a sitting room with a fireplace.

Outdoors, a pool and spa anchors the park-like grounds, which contain a courtyard, a sunken basketball half-court, an outdoor fireplace and a barbecue station covered by a ramada.

Henderson, 55, spent a quarter-century in the big leagues with nine different teams, including the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers. A first-ballot Hall of Fame inductee in 2009, he ranks first all-time in stolen bases (1,406) and runs scored (2,295).

In a trade between former All-Stars, Henderson purchased the home from Sandberg, the former Chicago Cubs star who currently is the manager for the Philadelphia Phillies, in May 1996 for $1.65 million. Public records show Sandberg paid $400,000 for the property in 1990.
