SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne acquired by New Jersey investors
A New Jersey real estate investment trust has acquired the Hawthorne headquarters of rocket company SpaceX in a $46.7-million transaction.
Chambers Street Properties said it has purchased 1 Rocket Road, a 510,000-square-foot industrial building erected in 1966. The address, by Hawthorne Municipal Airport, is also known as 3109 Jack Northrop Ave.
Jack Northrop was an airplane designer who founded Northrop Corp. in 1939. SpaceX was co-founded in 2002 by high-profile business magnate Elon Musk, who is also chief executive of electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc.
SpaceX, formally known as Space Exploration Technologies Corp., designs, manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft. It has agreed to be the sole tenant of 1 Rocket Road through January 2023.
The seller of 1 Rocket Road was Westport Properties Inc., according to real estate data provider CoStar Group Inc.
