Wal-Mart will pump up its holiday staff by hiring more than 50,000 seasonal associates for its U.S. stores, the retail giant said.

The holidays are the “busiest time of the year” for the chain, according to a statement Friday. This year, the company plans to offer more hours to current employees as well.

“We know many customers are continuing to struggle as a result of the economy and high unemployment levels, but they have shown us that they’re resilient,” the company said in a statement.

Holiday hires tend to hold their positions for several months at most. They’re meant to buffer the existing retail workforce as it deals with swarms of shoppers between Black Friday and Christmas.

Earlier this week, Kohl’s Corp. said it plans to hire more than 52,700 holiday workers this year, 10% more than it took on last year. Target said it plans to hire 80,000 to 90,000 seasonal workers for its stores and distribution centers across the U.S. this year.

The number of summer jobs for teens this year soared to a six-year high, as nearly 160,000 young people ages 16 to 19 landed jobs in May, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc.
