Hyundai, Kia recall 1.7 million vehicles for electronic defects
The Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. are conducting a recall of more than 1.7 million vehicles — including the bestselling Elantra — to correct electronic defects.
Hyundai said that one of the problems involved 1.1 million vehicles with brake light switches that may malfunction.
The potential problem could also result in cruise control not disengaging and other potential risks that might increase the risk of a crash, the automaker said Wednesday on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.
Documents on the website said the switch defect could also lead to intermittent operation of the push-button start.
The defect could also prevent the gear shifter from being moved out of the park position. It could also cause the electronic stability control malfunction light to illuminate, according to NHTSA documents.
The recall includes model year 2007-09 Accents and Tucsons, 2007-10 Elantras, 2007-11 Santa Fes, 2008-09 Veracruzes, 2010-11 Genesis Coupes, and 2011 Sonatas.
Kia Motors is also recalling 623,658 vehicles for the same electronic defect.
The Kia recall includes model year 2007-2010 Rondos and Sportages, 2007-11 Sorentos, 2007 Sedonas, 2010-11 Souls and 2011 Optimas.
