BMW to bring diesel 3-Series to New York Auto Show
BMW announced Friday it will bring a trio of vehicles to the New York Auto Show later this month, including a new diesel 3-Series sedan.
The 328d will be making its U.S. premiere at the show, several months before it rolls into dealerships in late summer.
The car, which is sold in Europe as the 320d, has a turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine that makes 180 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. BMW said it will do zero-60 mph in about 7.2 seconds. The automaker expects the car to “well exceed 40 mpg” in highway driving; official EPA estimates are several months away.

It’s too early for pricing information, but the 328d will start under $40,000, according to BMW spokesman David Buchko.
The 328d joins a growing 3-Series family in the U.S. market. BMW launched a lower-cost 320i at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Also available is the turbocharged four-cylinder 328i, the six-cylinder 335i and the ActiveHybrid 3.
Also coming to the New York show will be another forthcoming member of the 3-Series family; the Gran Turismo. This odd amalgamation of a hatchback and station wagon will go on sale this summer, and will be available in either 328i or 335i variations.
The final member of BMW’s trio headed to New York is the Concept Active Tourer, a compact plug-in hybrid model. The concept made its world debut at the Paris Auto Show in September 2012, and it foretells of a model likely heading to the U.S. market wearing a 1-Series badge.
It’s front-wheel-drive, a departure for the automaker, and is powered by a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder gas engine and an electric motor. The combination makes 190 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. BMW says the four-door hatchback concept will get about 94 mpg in highway driving.
Press days for the 2013 New York Auto Show are March 26 and 27. Check Highway 1 for full coverage of the event, including the world debut of the Cadillac CTS, Jeep Cherokee, Toyota Highlander, Range Rover Sport, among others.
