Wilder Theater nears its opening
The UCLA Hammer Museum’s Billy Wilder Theater, which is nearing the completion of its construction, will open to the public in early December. The $26.5-million project was designed by Los Angeles architect Michael Maltzan.
The Hammer’s public programs, including lectures, forums and readings, are currently being held in the museum’s Gallery 6. These will move to the Wilder, which was conceived as a flexible space, in December. The UCLA Film and Television Archive will move there in February.

Billy Wilder Theater: A Quick Takes item in Friday’s Calendar section about the December opening of the UCLA Hammer Museum’s Billy Wilder Theater referred to it as a $26.5-million project. That figure was an early estimate of the cost of the entire renovation work at the museum. The museum says the cost of the Billy Wilder Theater is $7.5 million.
The 295-seat theater is inside the museum’s grounds, at the courtyard level, but its space has rarely been used for programming. It is named for the celebrated director of “Sunset Blvd.” and “Some Like It Hot,” who died in 2002, and is endowed with a $5-million gift from his widow, Audrey.
An invitation-only opening celebration will take place Dec. 3, with plans to open the theater to the public shortly after, a Hammer spokesman said.
