Post Office Branch Named for Wooden
John Wooden, the legendary UCLA basketball coach, had a post office named after him Saturday, his 96th birthday.
Wooden’s name was attached to the Reseda post office, and the UCLA cheerleaders were on hand for the morning event, as was the school’s alumni band, which played “Happy Birthday.”
Wooden, wearing a bolo tie and blue suit, said he was humbled by the honor, which was secured by Rep. Brad Sherman (D- Los Angeles).
“Coach Wooden is a man who has meant so much to basketball players, fans, to sports in general and especially to those of us who have been neighbors in the San Fernando Valley for these three decades,” Sherman said.
During Wooden’s 28 years as the UCLA coach, he racked up 10 national championships and finished with a 620-147 record.
