Ford nailed the role

Times Staff Writer

Actor Harrison Ford raised his two sons in this Hollywood Hills home, according to the listing agents, and he also did much of the carpentry.

Ford was a self-taught carpenter when he lived in the house during the ‘60s and ‘70s with his then-wife and two small sons.

His work as a carpenter helped support his acting career, and it helped him to land one of his biggest roles.

Director George Lucas hired the actor-carpenter to build cabinets. This led to Ford auditioning for and winning the part of Han Solo in “Star Wars,” and the rest is Hollywood history.

If there is any doubt about Ford’s credentials as a carpenter, check the original swing-out carriage garage doors, decorated with his draftsman drawings and notes.

About this house: It was built in 1911 as a Forest Service lookout cabin, and through the years, it has been maintained and updated. The lodge-style compound is on three lots. The ceilings are high and open-beamed, the fireplace is made of exposed brick, and there is quite a lot of detailed woodwork that Ford completed throughout the house. Since he and his family moved out, subsequent owners have included actor David Carradine.
