Nine Convicted in 2002 Burning of Muslims

Nine Hindu defendants retried in the fatal burning of a group of Muslims during rioting in western India in 2002 were convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Eight other Hindus were acquitted.
More than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, died during the three months of rioting in Gujarat state.
