‘Angels’ honors keep floating in

The heavens have been smiling down on “Angels in America” since it premiered on Broadway more than a decade ago. HBO’s acclaimed adaptation dominated the Emmy nominations Thursday with 21 nods, adding to an already long string of honors for Tony Kushner’s AIDS drama.

The first half of the play, “Millennium Approaches,” won four Tony Awards in 1993, including best play. Kushner also picked up the Pulitzer Prize. The conclusion, “Perestroika,” received Tonys in the same four categories the next year.

The HBO miniseries also has been an unstoppable force at awards ceremonies. Since “Angels” premiered on the cable network last December, it has won awards from the American Cinema Editors, the Art Directors Guild, the Broadcast Film Critics Assn., the Cinema Audio Society, the Directors Guild of America, GLAAD, Golden Globes (winning five), the National Board of Review, the PGA Golden Laurel and the Screen Actors Guild, as well as the Black Reel Award and the Humanitas Prize.

Further evidence of the “Angels” awards juggernaut: It nabbed four supporting actor nominations, including one for Jeffrey Wright, who won a Tony for playing the same role, Belize, 10 years ago in “Perestroika.”
