A strong earthquake rattled Taiwan this morning, causing buildings in the capital of Taipei to sway and startled people to flee their homes. No injuries were immediately reported.

The Central Weather Bureau said the magnitude 6.8 quake was centered near Hualien, about 110 miles east of Taipei.

The temblor hit just off the coast off the eastern county of Hualien, the weather bureau said.

Earthquakes frequently shake the island, but most cause little or no damage. However, a 7.6-magnitude quake in September 1999 killed 2,378 people and destroyed more than 40,000 homes.
