Trojans Break Swim Record
USC won the 800 freestyle relay in an NCAA-record time and Erik Vendt won the 400-yard individual medley Friday at the NCAA men’s swimming and diving championships at Athens, Ga.
USC’s relay team of junior Jeff Lee, senior Rodrigo Castro, senior Tamas Kerekjarto and sophomore Klete Keller posted a time of 6 minutes 17.35 seconds, to set a school record and finish more than six seconds ahead of second-place Texas. Texas held the previous NCAA record of 6:18.00 set in 2001.
It was USC’s first relay title since 1977, when it won the 400 and 800 freestyle relays.
Vendt won the 400 individual medley in 3:40.65, breaking his school record by .33 seconds, which he set at last season’s NCAAs.
Keller, who won the 500 freestyle Thursday, finished third in the 200 freestyle in 1:35.42. Adam Sioui of Florida won in 1:34.67.
USC is in fourth with 193 points. Texas leads with 376 points, followed by Stanford (361) and Auburn (252.5). Competition concludes today.
