Navy Sets Meeting on MTBE Cleanup
The Navy is inviting the public to a meeting about the status of environmental cleanups--including a way to clear a contaminant plume--at its two Ventura County sites, Port Hueneme and Point Mugu.
The Restoration Advisory Board, made up of community, regulatory and Navy members, will review and discuss programs and cleanup plans at Naval Base Ventura County. There will also be a presentation about Port Hueneme’s 4-month-old program to remove the contaminant MTBE from water sources.
The Naval Construction Battalion Center is a test site for various methods of controlling the fast-moving pollutant that was intended to help fuel burn cleaner but also dirtied ground water.
Scientists believe that the most effective procedure to clean up the plume is to create a micro-barrier of microorganisms that eat MTBE, breaking it down into carbon dioxide and water.
“They’ll be discussing other methods that we’re considering, current and planned technologies,” said Teri Reid, spokeswoman for the base.
The meeting is scheduled from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Orvene Carpenter Community Center, 500 Park Ave., Port Hueneme.
