Valencia’s Early Salvo Knocks Off Esperanza

Abel Patricio scored two goals to spark Valencia to a 3-2 victory over third-ranked Esperanza in nonleague boys’ soccer Wednesday.

Leeray Ocampo’s goal in the 30th minute broke a 2-2 tie for the Tigers, who then held on through a scoreless second half.

Shane O’Meara and Matt McNally had goals for Esperanza.

In other nonleague boys’ games:

No. 1 Woodbridge 2, Orange 1--Pieter Berger scored the winner in the 70th minute for host Woodbridge. Berger scored his first goal in the first half, but Marco Guilendez of Orange tied the score early in the second half.

Nick Holt and Roy Chingarian had assists for the Warriors.

No. 5 Santa Margarita 5, Irvine 0--Matt Basin, a sophomore forward, had two goals and Matt Holtrust, Erick Foss and Christian Hanson also scored for the visiting Eagles. Goalkeeper Loren Brennan had 14 saves for Irvine.

No. 8 Huntington Beach 4, Long Beach Wilson 1--Drew McAthy had two goals and Alex Maddox and Sasha Klestjian also scored for host Huntington Beach (2-0), which led, 2-1, at halftime.

No. 10 Servite 1, Santa Ana 1--Raemund Ruiz’s goal with 10 minutes to play tied the game for the visiting Friars. Diego Mejia scored on an assist from Julio Laguna for Santa Ana.

El Modena 2, Rialto Eisenhower 1--Steve Torres, off an assist from Joel Ramos, scored in the 75th minute to give El Modena the victory. Drew Desantos had tied the score for the Vanguards 10 minutes earlier off a pass from A.J. Krueger.

El Toro 2, Corona del Mar 0--Sophomore Doug Franco and junior Matt Rolfe scored for the host Chargers. Geoff Collier made nine saves for Corona del Mar.

Foothill 2, Tustin 1--David McAulay scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute off an assist from Ryan Crume for visiting Foothill. Rafael Elias scored in the first half for the Knights and John Geary had a first-half goal for Tustin.

Fountain Valley 1, Trabuco Hills 1--Drew Tolman scored on a penalty kick in the 26th minute to salvage a tie for visiting Fountain Valley.

Justin Butoric scored in the first half for Trabuco Hills.

Laguna Hills 2, Dana Hills 2--Kiley Maertz and Matt Chandler scored for the Hawks, while Steve Jennings and Forest Smith scored for the host Dolphins.

Marina 4, Ocean View 0--Sophomore Anthony Ordonez scored three goals and Brett Landry also scored for host Marina.

Saddleback 0, Costa Mesa 0--John Castaneda made six saves for Saddleback. Francisco Berrera had three saves for the host Mustangs.

Santiago 5, Anaheim 4--Milbin Mejia, Angel Rivera, Gerardo Montano, Edgar Mendoza and Daniel Barriga scored goals for host Santiago (2-0), to help the Cavaliers overcome a 3-1 halftime deficit.

Angel Rangel had two goals for Anaheim.

Savanna 3, Cerritos 2--Eros Alvarado scored two goals and Nestali Zaragoza added one for the visiting Rebels, who led, 2-0, at halftime.

In the Chadwick Harbor boys’ soccer tournament:

Calvary Chapel 1, Chadwick 1 (Calvary Chapels wins in penalty kicks, 4-3)--Junior David Linzey stopped two penalty shots in overtime to lift the Eagles in the first round game. Taylor Hill scored for Calvary Chapel in regulation.

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

No. 9 Corona del Mar 4, Ocean View 0--Lauren Shephardson, Allison Harvey, Kinzie Kramer and Kristin Hanson scored for the Sea Kings.

Canyon 5, Saddleback 0--Heather Allen, a sophomore forward, scored twice and Kim Jents, Jennifer Merrell and Ashley Gerace added one goal each for the host Comanches.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

No. 3 Santa Margarita 7, Canyon 3--Erika Figge had three goals and Kristina Kunkel had two to lead the Eagles. Kristen Carfioli had 12 saves for Santa Margarita.
