L.A. All-Stars Overwhelm Orange County All-Stars

Showtime looks like it has returned to Southern California and will be appearing next season at Pauley Pavilion, as UCLA’s newest recruits, Baron Davis and Schea Cotton, led the Los Angeles County all-stars over the Orange County all-stars, 122-110, in the fifth annual Intense City Summer All-Star Basketball Classic at Ocean View High.

Davis and Cotton electrified the standing-room only crowd with reverse dunks, alley oops and behind-the-back-passes.

Orange County played without Mater Dei standout Kevin Augustine, the USC recruit who was out because of a sore shoulder, and could not contain the high-flying acrobatics of the Los Angeles all-stars. Cotton had a game-high 23 points and Davis had 21 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and four steals.

Davis, a first-team All-American from Santa Monica Crossroads, kept the crowd buzzing in the first half with a series of dunks. The best dunk by the 6-foot-2 guard, who won the dunk contest at halftime, came during the game as he bounced the ball off the backboard to himself and jammed it. Later in the second half, he brought the house down again by bouncing the ball off the board to set up a Cotton slam.

Los Angeles led, 69-54, at halftime. Cotton led the way with 16 points. Woodbridge’s Chris Burgess (Duke) led Orange County with 15 points at halftime.

Orange County had a height advantage with the 7-1 Burgess and Villa Park’s 6-11 Eric Chenowith. But the Orange County all-stars had a hard time converting offensive rebounds and were unable to slow down Los Angeles’ fast break.

Burgess led Orange County with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Chenowith (Kansas) had 17 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Mater Dei’s Mike Vukovich (UC Santa Barbara) had 17 points and Sonora’s Ben Jones (UC Irvine) had 16.

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake’s Jason and Jarron Collins (Stanford) scored 17 and 13 points, and Compton Dominguez’s Kenny Brunner (Georgetown) had 18.
