City Council Approves Plan for Sports Complex in Park

The Long Beach City Council unanimously approved plans for a 39.5-acre sports park to be constructed in one corner of the city’s largest park despite public protests that the complex would result in financial losses and eliminate too much open space.

City officials acknowledged that the park, which would be operated by Tucson-based Recreation Technologists Inc., probably will require subsidies from public coffers. But several council members said the planned El Dorado Regional Park complex, which consists of several playing fields intended for adult use, is needed to free up other city fields for youngsters.
