McDonald’s Reaches Settlement in Coffee Burn Lawsuit: An 81-year-old woman who won a nearly $2.9-million jury award after she was burned by McDonald’s coffee has reached a settlement with the fast-food chain. Terms of the agreement were confidential, attorneys for Stella Liebeck and McDonald’s Corp. said. Liebeck suffered third-degree burns on her legs, groin and buttocks in 1992 when she spilled coffee. She had put the cup between her legs and tried to pry the lid off at a McDonald’s drive-through. Liebeck contended the coffee was a defective product because it was too hot. The coffee was 165 to 170 degrees, she said, while coffee brewed at home is 135 to 140 degrees.
