Whitey Herzog Will Be Offered Position as Royals’ Manager

Whitey Herzog, who resigned last January as general manager of the Angels, will be offered the vacant Kansas City Royals’ managerial job, sources said.

However, there’s no assurance he will accept the position.

Herzog, who is scheduled to talk this week with the Royals, actually was offered the job in midseason but declined, allowing Hal McRae to continue as manager.

McRae was fired Thursday, and the Royals once again will attempt to persuade Herzog to return to managing. The job would reunite him with close friend George Brett, who retired after the 1993 season and is the Royals’ vice president/baseball operations.

If Herzog, 62, declines, Chicago Cub third base coach Tony Muser is expected to be a leading candidate.

Herzog, who could not be reached for comment, has not managed since July 6, 1990 when he resigned as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. He became vice president/player personnel for the Angels one month later. Herzog managed the Royals to three division titles from 1976-1978.
