Woman Drops Rape Case Against Detective

A New York City detective and two friends accused of raping a Burbank woman were released Monday after the alleged victim told authorities she had been drinking heavily, consented to sex with the police officer and “may have” led on his friends.

“After we interviewed her, we knew no way could we convince 12 jurors beyond a doubt” that she was raped, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Walt Lewis, assistant head of the district attorney’s Pasadena office.

Lewis added that the 27-year-old woman did not want to pursue charges against the three tourists, whom she had accused of raping her after driving her home from a local nightclub.

Released from the Burbank City Jail were New York Police Detective Thomas John Kid, 27; John James Calimano, 27; and Richard Daniel Haime, 28, all of New York City.

They were arrested Thursday as they stood in line at NBC Studios in Burbank for a taping of the Jay Leno Show and were held in lieu of $1-million bail on charges of rape, forced oral copulation and false imprisonment.
