Pop star Michael Bolton will exchange his microphone for a baseball bat today when he and his band members challenge TV and film celebrities in a charity softball game at Murdock Stadium on the El Camino College campus.

Bolton will tuck his trademark locks into a Bolton Bombers cap and take the infield against the Hollywood Allstars at 1:30 p.m.

“It’s a fun but competitive celebrity softball game between two teams of entertainment personalities who are living their baseball fantasies while helping to raise money for a worthwhile charity,” said Russ Gill, Allstars team coordinator.

The Hollywood Allstars, a 25-member team composed of actors, has traveled the country playing softball for charity for 14 years, Gill said.

Some of the more famous names to grace the team’s roster are Allstars captain Mark Harmon (“Reasonable Doubts”), Michael Keaton (“Batman Returns”), Timothy Busfield (“thirtysomething”) and Corbin Bernsen (“L.A. Law”).

Busy schedules may preclude these stars from attending Sunday’s game, Gill said, but soap opera favorites such as Peter Reckell (“Days of Our Lives”), Don Diamont (“The Young and the Restless”), comedian Fred Willard (“D.C. Follies”) and other familiar faces plan to suit up.

Gill met Bolton (“A real baseball fanatic”) at a celebrity game at Yankee Stadium earlier this year and the two decided on an event to benefit the South Bay, Gill said.

Proceeds from today’s game will go to the Torrance Memorial Hospital Burn Ward, the Little Company of Mary Hospital Pediatrics Wing and the El Camino College Athletic Department.

Stadium gates open at noon when the two teams take batting practice. Tickets are $5 and are available at the stadium on the day of the event. Fans who purchase souvenir score cards for the game will be eligible to win one of a dozen prizes, including Bolton’s baseball cap.
