La Canada Flintridge : Waste Collection Change

The City Council adopted a solid-waste ordinance to fund a curbside recycling program and the city’s other waste-management efforts.

The ordinance was proposed in response to state regulations calling for the volume of the city’s trash to be cut 25% by 1995 and 50% by 2000.

Under the ordinance, unanimously adopted Monday, the city’s monthly billing of households will cease, and the city’s two private waste haulers will be required to pay a fee equal to 10% of their gross yearly revenues. Haulers may pass those costs on to homeowners. In addition, trash collectors will be required to provide two summaries each year of the kind and amount of garbage collected in the city.

Average charges to property owners could be $19.60 a month, an increase of $4.60 over current costs. Senior citizens on fixed incomes would pay a maximum of $11.50, said Mindy Jacobs, public works assistant.
