‘Beverly Hills’ Cops Fans’ Cheers : Emmy Crowd Takes to ‘90210’ Heartthrobs

“Beverly Hills, 90210” was the definite star of the 43rd annual Emmy Awards Sunday--at least to the throngs of fans watching the celebrities arrive outside the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

Despite the presence of such heavyweights as James Earl Jones, Jill Eikenberry, Michael Tucker, Glenn Close and Peter Falk, it was the teen heartthrobs of Fox’s “Beverly Hills, 90210” who garnered the biggest cheers and screams from the teen fans who lined the streets. Jason Priestley and Shannen Doherty, who play twins Brandon and Brenda Walsh, arrived together hand in hand and were attacked en masse by the photographers, as was their co-star Luke Perry, who plays Brenda’s boyfriend, Dylan.

As usual, the Emmys were sort of a cut-rate version of the Oscars: less glamour, less sophistication and a general feeling of anything goes in terms of dress. Miniskirts were the most prevalent choice among actresses, but Olivia Brown of “Dear John” was dressed in something that looked like a lamp shade, and Marlee Matlin, nominee Candice Bergen and nominee Sharon Gless wore tailored pants’ suits.

Many of the stars wore red ribbons, signifying their support for people with AIDS.

There were some surprises. The cast of CBS’ “Evening Shade”--Burt Reynolds with wife Loni Anderson, Charles Durning, Elizabeth Ashley and Marilu Henner--arrived in a bus. And a group of men and women wearing paper bags on their heads who called themselves “Paparazzi Busters” ran around handing out pizza boxes and calling cards.
