Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf wants to install satellite TV at his home to watch global news and entertainment programs but he can’t afford it, a newspaper reported today.

The king and his family live at the 18th-Century Drottningholm Castle, where they can watch only Sweden’s two non-commercial public TV channels.

Cultural authorities have denied the king permission to set up a satellite dish on the roof of the building to receive foreign telecasts. The suburban castle is a major tourist attraction, and the authorities feel that a dish would spoil the appearance of the building.

The Aftonbladet newspaper said that the king could receive foreign programs by installing an underground cable but that it would cost about $175,000.
