UNLV athletic officials are asking the city of Las Vegas to make it illegal for college athletes to bet on games in the city’s casinos.

Such betting is against NCAA rules. But Mark Warkentien, an assistant to the UNLV athletic director, said Thursday that there are no state or federal laws barring an athlete from placing such bets in Nevada casinos.

Warkentien said he is concerned that an athlete who is 21 years old could come to Las Vegas and bet on his own game, even though the athlete would be in violation of NCAA rules.
