An Indianapolis group has made an offer to purchase the Seattle Mariners from owner George Argyros, club President Chuck Armstrong said.

Argyros, a Southern California land developer who bought the American League franchise in 1981, scheduled a news conference today in the Kingdome to discuss the offer.

Armstrong confirmed that Jeff Smulyan, head of Emmis Broadcasting Corp. in Indiana and real estate developer Michael Browning were heading a group negotiating to buy the Mariners. Armstrong said the group would not move the team out of Seattle.
