‘J-Factor’ in the Election

It is strange how the Republicans continue to put so much emphasis on the threat that the Democrats plan to increase taxes. They are appealing in the crassest way to the selfishness of human nature. They hope that we forget how the Republican Administration has begged Congress to spend money that we had to borrow. They are getting us to think only of the immediate gratification of a whim. They want us not to think of our children and grandchildren who will have to pay interest on the debt. Taxing gets the money without interest.

To get us to borrow so much, they must keep reminding us to be afraid of the communists in Europe and Central America. If we are nervous enough, we will allow them to spend money we don’t have on the military, while we let our domestic needs further pile up.

This is unfair. We all spend our money to supply what we want. We are all willing to forgo some immediate desire in order to gain a greater value in the future. Therefore it is up to persons with adequate perspective to keep reminding us of our long-term fiscal responsibility.
