Hearns-Barkley Rematch Is Revealed : Fight Disclosed After Duarte Stops Cisneros in Seventh Round

After Frankie Duarte, previously the North American Boxing Federation bantamweight champion, scored a seventh-round technical knockout Wednesday night, his trainer had a surprise announcement.

Greg Goossen, a trainer at the Ten Goose Boxing Club in North Hollywood, said that Duarte will fight Oct. 12 in Las Vegas on the undercard of the rematch between Thomas Hearns and Iran Barkley, a bout that had yet to be confirmed.

Hearns, the only boxer to win titles in four weight divisions, lost his World Boxing Council middleweight crown to Barkley in a third-round knockout June 6. Their contract called for a rematch; details were reportedly worked out last week.

Promoter Bob Arum was expected to announce the fight next week.

Duarte, who pounded Ron Cisneros to the canvas twice in the seventh round at the Country Club in Reseda before Cisneros’ trainer threw in the towel, confirmed that he would fight on the same card as Hearns and Barkley.

He will fight for the International Boxing Federation bantamweight title, facing the winner of a July 9 bout between champion Kelvin Seabrooks and challenger Gaby Canizales.

Duarte, 32, hadn’t fought in more than a year before Wednesday when he faced Cisneros, a fighter he had stopped in 1985. Last June, Duarte won the NABF bantamweight championship with a 10th-round TKO over Albert Davila at the Forum. A scheduled title fight against Wilfredo Vasquez, the World Boxing Assn. champion, was squelched when Vasquez lost his crown in May to Khaokor Galaxy of Thailand.

Against Cisneros, Duarte started slow, but in the fifth round he began throwing crisp combinations and scoring heavily.

In the seventh, Duarte backed Cisneros against the ropes with two jabs and then decked him with a left uppercut. Cisneros was up at the count of six but went down 30 seconds later from a right uppercut. He again got up, but when Duarte landed 25 unanswered punches, the fight was stopped.
