Pete Rose, manager of the Cincinnati Reds, lost his appeal for a reduction of a 30-day suspension for pushing an umpire when a three-man review panel today unanimously upheld the harshest punishment for a manager in 40 years.

No mention was made of the $10,000 fine in a statement released by the league. The panel of National League club executives counted this week as part of the suspension, which will end June 1. Rose has not managed since Sunday because he had knee surgery. He was penalized by league President Bart Giamatti Monday for twice shoving umpire Dave Pallone in the ninth inning of Saturday’s Mets-Reds game.
