Strikebreaker in Teachers’ Walkout

If Fran Reed (Commentary, April 17) was truly “our partner in education and not our enemy,” she would not have been a scab for the one-day strike in the Orange Unified School District. Those teachers were on strike to make the profession of education better for everyone: students, teachers and, yes, substitute teachers too.

Teachers who strike sacrifice more than the one day’s pay they lose for striking. A great deal of soul-searching goes into making the decision to strike, and teachers are very concerned about the quality of care given by a substitute who, by crossing the picket line, shows utter contempt and disregard for the reasons behind the strike.

Think about it Ms. Reed, was the $175 really worth it? You should be asking yourself why the Orange Unified School District doesn’t value your substituting for normal conditions as highly--why do they then pay you only $70 per day?
