Local News in Brief : Stepson Is Charged in Woman’s Death
One count of murder was filed Friday against Timothy Chavira, 23, the stepson of a Burbank woman whose badly decomposed body was found in the trunk of her car earlier this week, authorities said.
Timothy Chavira was arrested Thursday by police in Portland, Ore., acting under a probable cause warrant issued by Burbank authorities, Burbank Police Lt. Duane Dow said.
“He waived extradition this afternoon and should be back in Burbank this evening,” Dow said late Friday afternoon. Chavira will be arraigned on the murder charge Monday, Dow said.
The suspect’s stepmother, Laurie Ann Chavira, 48, was last seen alive on Aug. 22, police said. Her car was found Tuesday.
The victim had been stabbed once in the chest and beaten repeatedly with a blunt object, said Bill Gold of the county coroner’s office.
Timothy Chavira had recently gotten off parole after serving a jail sentence for a robbery committed in Oregon, said Marissa N. Batt, a deputy Los Angeles district attorney.
No official would comment on a possible motive for the murder.
Dow said the stepson had apparently been visiting Los Angeles and was “kind of a wanderer.”
