WASHINGTON — Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia plan to tour the United States in 1988 for ceremonies marking the 350th anniversary of the first Swedish colony in the New World.
Ingemund Bengtsson, Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, announced the visit at a news conference Thursday and said plans are being made in both countries for a celebration, entitled “New Sweden ’88.”
Legislation has been introduced in Congress calling for President Reagan to proclaim 1988 as the “Year of New Sweden.”
