Lewis Carroll’s classic stories of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass” get a new retelling in a star-studded four-hour “Alice in Wonderland” production that CBS will air over two nights this week, Monday and Tuesday from 8 to 10 p.m.
With 10-year-old Natalie Gregory as Alice, the large cast includes Anthony Newley as the Mad Hatter (shown with Gregory on the cover); Jayne Meadows and Robert Morley as the Queen and King of Hearts, Red Buttons as the White Rabbit, Telly Savalas as the Cheshire Cat and Martha Raye as the Duchess.
There are many other stars making appearances: Ringo Starr, Sammy Davis Jr., Shelley Winters, Ernest Borgnine, Carol Channing, Patrick Duffy, Roddy McDowall, Donald O’Connor . . . and on and on.
Irwin Allen produced the miniseries, for which Steve Allen wrote 19 songs and novelty numbers. Harry Harris directed from Paul Zindel’s script. Veteran costume designer Paul Zastupnevich did the costuming, and the musical staging was by Gillian Lynne, who has choreographed all of the productions of “Cats.”
