Wintry temperatures chilled the Rocky Mountains and Plains states for a second day today as a sodden blanket of snow lingered from a weekend snowstorm blamed for four deaths on icy highways.

Today’s morning temperatures dipped into single digits in Wyoming, the teens in western Nebraska and eastern Colorado, the 20s over sections of western Kansas, and the upper 30s as far south as northwest Texas.

An unusual reading of one below zero was reported at the Hohnholz Ranch north of Fort Collins, Colo., a low-lying area where skies were clear instead of cloudy as they were elsewhere in the state. For the third day in a row, Denver saw a new low record--25 degrees--breaking the old 29-degree mark from 1961.
